This year’s third, Biogeography issue of Transactions KarRC RAS is out of press

The third issue of the journal Transactions of the Karelian Research Centre RAS published this year is the Biogeography Series – one of the oldest in the outlet. The new issue includes scientific articles by Russian researchers on the natural environment of protected areas, materials from the Apatity-hosted all-Russian conference on monitoring carbon pools and greenhouse gas fluxes in terrestrial ecosystems, and a note commemorating ecologist and geographer Raimo Heikkilä.

Specialists presented ornithological and ecological research results at a meeting of the KarRC RAS Academic Council

At its meeting on April 9, the KarRC RAS Academic Council heard two presentations regarding the results of ornithological, geophysical, and environmental research conducted by staff from the Center’s institutes in Karelia and on the Kola Peninsula. Additionally, the new roster of the Editorial Board of the journal Transactions of the Karelian Research Center RAS was approved, including reputable Russian and foreign scientists.

Scientists from the KarRC RAS conduct a Limnology School in Kostomuksha

A Winter Limnology School and Workshop has started in Kostomuksha. It is held by specialists from the Northern Water Problems Institute (NWPI KarRC RAS) in collaboration with the Kostomuksha Nature Reserve. The participants – educators, environmentalists, early-career researchers – will be familiarized with methods of scientific work in the field and laboratory settings.

Satellite data helped scientist reveal the scope of land cover change in the Ladoga skerries area

Over the past 30 years, about a third of lichen-type pine forests on Tulolansaari Archipelago islands in Lake Ladoga have been affected by surface fires, which were most likely caused by human activities. At the same time, the archipelago’s abandoned farmlands are massively getting overgrown. Grassland area has decreased by more than 37%. This and other information has been gathered by scientists at the Department for Multidisciplinary Research KarRC RAS using modern techniques and remote sensing data. These results are important for conserving ecosystems of the Ladoga Skerries National Park.

A board for defending dissertations in physical and mathematical sciences was instated at the KarRC RAS

A dissertation board for obtaining academic degrees in physical and mathematical sciences started operating at the Karelian Research Center RAS. The significance of this event for the Center has been explained at the Institute of Applied Mathematical Research KarRC RAS.

Young CIS scientists networked on common water problems at a school and workshop organized by the KarRC RAS

The international school and workshop “Under the Pressure of Global Climate Change: a Youth Network for Water Ecosystem Research” in Petrozavodsk has come to an end. During four days, young researchers from Russia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan listened to lectures and mastered scientific techniques in practice, under the guidance of seasoned experts. In conclusion, the participants agreed to maintain the network and keep looking for opportunities to jointly study common environmental problems.

RAS Corr. Fellow Olga Bakhmet: Arctic biodiversity conservation is impossible without science as its foundation

The International Forum "Polar Bear Universe", organized by the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia and the Government of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, is taking place in St. Petersburg. At the forum’s Bio-ecological Arctic Cluster, KarRC RAS leader, RAS Corr. Fellow Olga Bakhmet spoke about the scientific foundations for conserving Arctic biodiversity and presented the expertise of Karelian scientists in this field.
